Project aims

  1. Bring together a systemic data and modelling approach for the NICER programme and future UKRI CE research investments
  1. Develop a national CE-Observatory dashboard for detailed description of baseline and comparison of alternative future CE states for specific resource-product-industry categories

Dashboard interface

  • Means to visualise baseline and explore against-baseline outputs across a range of resource-product-industry categories

  • Dashboard and components to be reusable and extensible

  • Prototype developed in R Shiny, Python Dash, React.js

  • Technology choice

    • Language: JavaScript/TypeScript
    • User interface: React.js
    • Component library: Mantine
    • Content management system (CMS): Contentful
    • Static site generator: Gatsby

Dashboard components

  • Flexible & modular set of components on each page. Can incorporate additions e.g. charts showing repairability index, other KPIs

  • Product assigned to sector (e.g. SIC Division), lifespan, mass/value and output mix data retrieved

  • Components:

    • Sankey diagram - D3 Sankey Circular/Plus
    • Line chart - inflow, stock and outflow over time
    • Bubble chart - ‘CE score’, lifespan and mass/value
    • KPI value boxes
    • Scenario builder - customisable & pre-programmed ‘what ifs’
    • Metadata box - Data quality communication e.g. FAIR scores, methodology for data and KPIs

(Meta)data pipeline

  • ‘Contribute’ data input: Centred around ease. CSV uploads

    • Data structures e.g. Flat file bill of materials as input to sankey x product flow data

      • To circulate a data and metadata template
  • Database >> Dashboard: Data API calls from bit.io (PostgreSQL query API solution with database storage)

Next steps (dashboard)

    • Initial NICER-programme feedback today - right info, right components, right libraries…

    • Integrate feedback

    • Site feature development including scenario builder, icon-based sankey filters and clickability, tile page

    • Finalise (meta)data pipeline (incl. scheduled ingestion where relevant) and circulate contributor instructions

  • April-October 2023

    • Scaling to a service integrating data outputs across the programme more seamlessly

    • Continued testing & evaluation with policy, industry and wider NICER stakeholders

    • Possibly widen data extraction pool e.g. online CE sales

    • Other functionality e.g. downloadable reports

Product lifespan extension series

  • Series of articles exploring the benefits of product lifespan extension (PLE)
  • One mechanism to integrate findings across NICER and wider community
  • Overview article published January 23, interview
  • Next planned article on electronics, after construction and then vehicles
  • Aim to reach wider audience, including bringing data to life
  • We would welcome case studies and collaboration incl. outside of PLE
  • Links also to the policy cluster outputs through exploring enablers
